Walk in Light: 1 John 2:1–6
In 1 John 2:1–6, John reminds us that the goal of following Jesus is not to make peace with sin, but to pursue a life that honors God. He encourages believers not to sin, while also giving us hope when we do: Jesus is our Advocate with the Father. Because Jesus is righteous and gave Himself as the sacrifice for our sins, forgiveness and restoration are available to everyone who turns to Him.
John makes it clear that grace is not an excuse to continue living in sin. Instead, the grace we receive through Jesus should lead us toward a life of obedience. Our obedience doesn't save us—Jesus does—but a genuine relationship with Jesus should produce a desire to follow His Word and live according to His ways.
John repeatedly uses the word “keep,” reminding us that following Jesus means taking His commands seriously and putting them into practice. As we remain connected to Jesus, His love is being worked out and matured in our lives, and we begin to walk more like Him.
Main Teaching Points:
Let’s not sin, but when we do, Jesus is our Advocate.
Sin is serious, but Jesus paid the price for our sin.
Jesus' sacrifice opens the door of salvation to everyone.
Obedience is evidence of a genuine relationship with Jesus.
Abide in Jesus and stay connected to Him.
The message closes with four simple reminders: Stay close to Jesus. Walk in obedience. Follow Jesus even when it's hard. Remember, you're still growing.
John's message is both a challenge and an encouragement: Jesus has paid the price for our sin, so let's stay close to Him and allow our lives to reflect the relationship we say we have with Him.
