On Repeat: Psalm 84 – I Want God, I Need God, I Trust God

Psalm 84 reminds us that our deepest longing is ultimately satisfied when we find our home in the presence of God. The sons of Korah express a deep desire to be near God, not simply because of the beauty of His house, but because they long for the presence of the living God.

This Psalm also reminds us that following God is a journey, and that journey sometimes takes us through difficult and dry places—the “Valley of Baca,” a picture of weeping, tears, and hardship. God doesn't always take us around the valley, but He provides the strength, nourishment, and refreshment we need to walk through it. We don't have to walk through those seasons alone; God gives us His presence and the community of His people to encourage and strengthen us.

As the Psalm closes, God is described as our sun and shield—the source of our light, joy, warmth, protection, and security. Ultimately, the sons of Korah understood that nothing the world can offer compares to being in God's presence.
